Fikile Mbalula recalls his last moments with Senzo Meyiwa

SA Sport Minister Fikile Mbalula has described Senzo Meyiwa as "a star that illuminates."  Fikile was speaking at a press conference held by Orlando Pirates for the late goalkeeper in Johannesburg.

Senzo was shot and killed on Monday night. No arrests have been made yet.

Speaking about Senzo’s death, Fikile said, "South Africa is poorer today without Senzo Meyiwa. There is no grave big enough to bury this African elephant." He added that the news came as a shock and they accept it with heavy hearts. “The criminals robbed us of this star that was so bright,” the minister said, saying further that the criminals must be brought to book as they have taken an innocent soul. “They must pay for what they have done. We will find these criminals and teach them a lesson,” he warned.

Fikile told the media that he last saw Senzo last week. "When I met him last week I saw a young man. And, when I met him at the Bafana Bafana camp, I saw a young man who was happy, jubilant and quite assertive. From that Senzo who was shy, afraid to speak or even utter a word in English, to a brave young man, who was confident… I say South Africa is a country full of possibilities and I think I saw that in Senzo, blossoming," Fikile said.

He went on to say that the Bafana Bafana goalkeeper was a good young man and worked very hard to get to where he was. “He never got anything on a silver platter."
