Getting to know: Beatenberg

Pop band Beatenberg are known for being shy lads, but when The Juice caught up with them, they were really keen to talk. Here's what we learnt, and we think you need to know, about Ross and the boys:

What's with the strange name?

We used a couple of names for one gig only, but we eventually decided on Beatenberg. Beatenberg is named after a mountain in Switzerland. We really liked the look of the place and we also liked the name. I mean how could you not? It has the word “beat” in it and “berg” as well – which is a pretty South African thing, says Ross.

We started off  being called ‘nice’, adds Drummer Rob. I have no idea how it came about. We were being rebellious and we couldn’t come up with a name so we thought it would be a nice name. We were playing at art school in 2009 and we tried to google that ish and you could never find us: “nice music”.

What's it like being in the band?

We suck up the fame and the groupies because it wasn’t always like that, says Rob.

If they weren't musicians?

If I wasn’t a musician I would be an artist or an architect, says Rob. Ross would probably be a chef and Matt would probably be a tennis player.

What gets them going?

We're all interested in Jazz and that rubs off on our shows and the way we play our instruments and the way we think of performing. We also like electro, hip hop, techno and House. The only thing we not interested in is rock,  says Rob

Rob is a Yoga Master and Ross is a Master Chef

I have a special someone in my life and I like to cook for her when I can. I make her many different things, especially picnics and breakfasts,” says Ross. But me? I’m into Yoga, twice a week. It’s really good for helping me play the drums, adds Rob.

The bands annoying habits

Matt is always late and Rob is obsessively neat. I have no bad habits, jokes Ross
