“I missed the smell of South Africa” St Lucia gets all weird with us!

St Lucia’s Jean- Phillip Grobler is as South African as you can get. He’s been out the country for several years and he hasn’t even lost the accent! He returns to South Africa this weekend to play at Park Acoustics in Cape Town and Pretoria. We sat down with the Joburg born, International superstar to chat about being home, getting an invite to Kimye’s wedding and crushing on Natalie Portman.

First things first, welcome home! Is this your first time back?

To perform, yes, but I’ve been back loads of times to visit family.  I’m really excited to perform for the first time this weekend. I’m gonna do a catch up session on some of the bands who I’ll be performing alongside too.

What’s the one thing you miss the most about home? The accent, the biltong, the checkers plastic packets?

It’s the little things you know, the smells mostly!

Really? The smells? What does it smell like?

It smells familiar. It’s hard to describe but it’s a summery smell. Oh! And I also miss All Gold Tomato Sauce and Mrs Balls Chutney.

You’ve stayed and played in several cities around the world, where is your favourite place to live and to play?

Uhm, definitely has to be New York!

Really, not South Africa?

I love South Africa but New York is not like living in a city in the world, it’s like living in the world. The moods and transport there are amazing! I think that’s the difference, when I’m in South Africa I have to drive.

And now for those random questions:

If you were stuck in a lift, would you rather be with Solange or that creepy lady-girl from The Grudge?

Oh definitely Solange. I’ve met people who know her well and they say she’s a really nice person. I’m sure that incident was just a family argument. I have arguments with my wife’s sister all the time.

Talking of Beyonce and Jay, did you get an invite to Kimye’s wedding?

Did I what? Hahaha no ways!

But if you did, what would you get them?

What don’t they have already? Maybe a nice big zebra carpet or Mrs Balls Chutney.

What’s your favourite cake?

My favourite cake.... Hmmm, that would have to be a mix between my three favourites: a pecan nut pie, a carrot cake and a lemon cake. That would be one mean cake!

Sounds delish. Tell us who’s your celebrity crush?

My wife is standing in front of me right now so I’d rather not say. But if I have to give names, it would have to be Natalie Portman. It’s got nothing to do with that outfit she wears in Star Wars  - she just seems like  a nice clean girl that has her priorities straight.
