INTERVIEW: THE EDITORS

UK rock band, The Editors, are heading to South Africa for a tour which will see them headline local music festival Oppikoppi  and play a show in Cape Town. Known for their hits Munich and An End Has a Start, the band hope to bring something special to their first visit to South Africa.

The Juice spoke to the band's drummer Ed Lay about the bands trip down South and found out he's not scared of anything! ...except eating a fox and sharing a tent with Scarlett Johansson.

Ed! It's great to speak to you. The Editors are coming to headline one of South Africa's biggest music festivals Oppikoppi. You must be excited?

Yeah! That's a pretty big deal! I didn't know Oppikoppi was that big, but we are ready for a wonderful adventure with you guys. It's just a shame we haven't come to SA before, but I guess this way we'll have more material to play for our fans. I don't even know if we have fans there, I don't know what to expect so we'll just play a mix of some old hits and some new material and see how you lot react.

Oh, you have fans here, alright! You've played at some of the biggest music festivals in the world, including Glastonbury and Coachella. Is there a certain festival ritual you guys do before you play?

We've played at loads of festivals and there have been loads of "waking-up-in-a-hole-somewhere- wondering -where-I-am" moments (except if it's Glastonbury, the hole is probably covered in water) But we don't do anything too hectic. We'll just walk around and go watch some bands play. I've seen some of the world's best bands, not the biggest- the best, play at festivals we've performed at.

We'll cover you with a blanket if we spot you in a ditch! Have you scouted out some of the local bands you'll be playing with?

No. Not yet. We just gonna pitch up and prepare to be surprised.

Fair enough. What will you guys be doing besides playing shows in Cape Town and Oppikoppi?

We are really excited to be having a few days in SA so it won't be a case of flying in and then flying out. We are gonna go up Table Mountain and watch some nature I think.

Talking of nature. Will you be eating anything crazy from nature when you are in SA?

I don't really know what there is to eat in SA but I'll eat anything with meat on it. Giraffe, buck, lion... I'll eat any meat you give me as long as it's been killed humanly!

What's your favourite animal?

That's pretty random. A fox.

Would you eat a fox?

I wouldn't eat a fox. They are too cute.

Final question for world peace.  If you could share an Oppi tent with any celeb, who would it be?

It would have to be Scarlett Johansson . But she wouldn't look at me twice.  I got the feeling she wouldn't fancy me much.
