Itumeleng Khune: "We were not just friends, we were brothers"

One of Senzo Meyiwa’s oldest friends, Itumeleng Khune, brought thousands of fans to tears with a moving tribute to the fallen soccer star.

Itu was asked to speak on behalf of Senzo’s friends at the memorial service which is currently underway at the Standard Bank Arena. He started off by asking fans to sing one of Senzo’s favourite songs.

An emotional Itumeleng told the crowd how he first met Senzo when they were just 15 years old. He remembered fondly how they dreamt of taking over from legends.

“We started competing for the number 1 jersey as teenagers. We were roommates at U17 level. We always spoke about our dreams and our goals,” he explained.

Itu recalled how coaches could never choose between them. “Coaches used to leave the keeper spots vacant and let the team decide because they couldn’t pick between us,” he explained.

Itumeleng emotionally thanked Coach Shakes Mashaba for believing in Senzo and promised to serve the nation just as Senzo had done.
