Karlien announces divorce from husband Derick

Johannesburg - Afrikaans singer, Karlien van Jaarsveld, has confirmed that she and her husband, Derick Hougaard, will be getting a divorce.

The news has shocked many, with messages flooding Karlien's Facebook page shortly after she announced the news on the social media site earlier this evening.

Karlien, who recently won Strictly Come Dancing, said on her Facebook fan page that she didn't know how to tell fans the news.

"For a long time I didn't know how to share this with everyone and I've thought about how to do it, when to do it and how to do it. But some time or other, it is going to come out so I'd rather share it with you myself. My husband and I are splitting and it's a difficult time for everybody. And I hope that everybody that is reading this will respect us during this time. Thank you for your love and understanding in everything."

The couple got married in 2013 and have two children together.  Earlier this year, they experienced a miscarriage with their third child and openly spoke about their devastation about the incident.

"I don't think my heart has ever hurt this much, whether I've cried this much. You have changed all the bad things in my life, made my tough side soft. Your mother and I are closer to each other," wrote Derick on Facebook about the baby girl they lost.

Most recently, Derick opened up to Netwerk24 about suffering from depression and battling the demons that come along with the the condition. "It doesn't always go well. It's hard. That doesn't make us abnormal," he said about his marriage to Karlien to the site.

After winning the Strictly Come Dancing competition, the couple were in Durban for some much needed rest. Just hours before the announcement on Karlien's Facebook page, Derick posted a picture of Karlien on the beach with their two young children. In the caption he wrote: "When you make a commitment, you build hope. When you kept it, you build trust."
