Following the death of Senzo Meyiwa, Kelly Khumalo was lambasted on social media for her hit single Asine.
Asine is an Tshivenda song, which means 'It wasn't me.' The track is about a woman who is accused of killing her husband and during the court case, she kept saying "it’s not me, it’s not me" (asine, asine).
After news of Senzo's death rocked the nation, people started to think Kelly had written the song in reference to his death, but the singer has set the record straight over the claims.
"The song was written by my producer Chico Twala long ago and I was approached to sing it in April this year. I decided to do the song because the message is deep and I wanted to be bold enough to spread that message," she explained.
Kelly admitted that the song was prophetic to an extent, but no one could've known what would happen to Senzo. "There is some amount of prophecy to the song but I couldn't have known, only God knew what was going to happen in a few months time," she added.
The singer added that she represents the thousands of women without a voice, who are ostracized by society.
She performed the song live at a media listening session earlier today. And, the performance was emotionally charged and breathtakingly beautiful.
