Johannesburg - It was something old and something new on Coke Studio this week when the legendary traditional group, Mahotella Queens worked with Ray Phiri's daughter Nonku Phiri. Fans were also introduced to Indie band, Match.
Here's what went down:
Mahotella Queens x Nonku Phiri
"Our experience on Coke Studio was amazing! We worked with a young child, Nonku Phiri, and we were surprised when we learnt that she is Ray Phiri's daughter," The Mahotella Queens' Hilda Tloubatla tells us. "She is brilliant and we weren't surprised - she's as talented as her father. So gifted."
What we loved most about the fusion:
The fusion brought back some of our favourite Mbaqanga sounds in legendary group, The Mahotella Queens, while adding a modern twist, thanks to Nonku's powerful voice.
Where to get the track:
The track is called Ziphatheni Kahle and you can get it here.
Match
Indie outfit, Match, impressed the show's executive producers to earn themselves a spot on Coke Studio and it's not hard to see why. They bring a fresh sound to the studio that more than matched our expectations.
What we loved most about the session:
It's an amazing feeling when you hear a sound that simply takes your breath away. It's the kind of feeling we get when we hear Match and we can't wait to hear more from them.
Where to get the track:
The track is called Bravery and you can get it here.
