Moneoa has opened up about growing up in a poverty stricken family.
The afro-pop singer told Sowetan that she's not ashamed of her past. Despite not having a cushy life, Moneoa believes its what moulded her into who she is today.
She told the paper that sometimes her family would not have running water and electricity when her mom didn't have money to pay the bills.
Monea explained that it was her circumstances that led her to focus on dancing. "When I realised that we were poor, I used to enter a lot of dance competitions so that I could get money to help my mother. I also did modelling on the side while at school," she said.
She added that eventually things got better because her mom got a job in Johannesburg, but even has her singing career gets off the ground, Moneoa says she'll never be ashamed of her past.
