Classic Christmas movies to binge-watch this festive season
The holidays are upon us and although it’s a time of giving and being with family, it’s also time to rest from school or work.
So what better way to rest than binge-watching good movies to get everyone into the spirit of Christmas?
We’ve compiled a top 10 classic Christmas movie binge-watch list.
1. Home Alone
This classic 1990 movie is about an 8-year-old boy Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) who accidentally gets left behind when his family goes on holiday to Paris. While enjoying being away from his family, he realises ttwo con men plan to rob his home and does all he can to protect the house.
According to Huffington Post, when the movie came out it remained at number one for 12 weeks straight, and since then it’s produced a number of sequels, toys and video games.
2. How the Grinch Stole Christmas
This movie is an adaptation of Dr Seuss’ children’s book and sees a green creature named the Grinch (played by Jim Carrey), who hates Christmas, try to ruin the holidays for the residents of a town named Who-ville. His plans are disrupted when he meets the little named Cindy Lou Who.
In 2000 How the Grinch Stole Christmas was nominated for three Academy Awards and won the one for best make-up, according to Box Office Mojo.
3. This Christmas
Rotten Tomatoes’ Jason Buchanan summarises this holiday story as a reunion drama that sees an estranged family coming together for the first time in seven years and rediscovering long forgotten bonds.
The 2007 movie features a star-studded cast, including Chris Brown (who plays Michael “Baby” Whitfield), veteran actress Loretta Divine (who plays the matriarch Ma’Dere Whitfield), Idris Elba (Quentin Whitfield) as well as Lauren London (Melanie “Mel” Whitfield) among others.
4. A Madea Christmas
This is another one of Tyler Perry’s Madea films, which began with the Diary of a Mad Black Woman. In this flick Madea (played by Tyler) accompanies her niece to visit her niece’s estranged daughter who refuses to come home for Christmas because of her judgemental mother and because she’s hiding her marriage to a white man. This movie is perfect for fans of Madea and those who love comedy.
Movie House Memories summarises this fantasy film as a story about an orphan who crawls out of his crib and into Santa’s bag. When he’s discovered at the North Pole, Papa Elf raises the little one as an elf and names him Buddy. As he grows up Buddy learns he doesn’t fit in because of his size and lack of elfish talent. After discovering the truth about where he comes from a grown up Buddy (played by Will Ferrell) sets off for New York to find his family.
