Cape town - Rapper Emtee is all about being celebrated for his own work without giving away the credit, and the upcoming year will be one of "twice as much" the rapper tells DRUM.

On MTV Base Africa's Behind the Label this week, the Thank You rapper spoke out about how his previous label, Ambitiouz Entertainment, took all the credit for his work.

The episode, which also featured artists like Fifi Cooper and Gigi LaMayne, focused on the controversy which eventually resulted in their departure from the label.

On the show, Emtee said he didn't even get the change to take any of his awards home for his parents to see.

He recalled a specific incident after his first South African Hip Hop Awards win, "I was very happy and everyone was congratulating me while I had the award in my hand. The boss man then comes up behind and says, 'Give me what's mine'. When I checked, the award had my name on it."

Earlier this year he took to Twitter to ask for his awards back.

Speaking to DRUM about his music career, the rapper says nothing has stopped and the immediate plan now is "new music, new perspective".

Fans will get to hear this on his next album. "It is going to be different because I have freedom of creativity now, freedom of speech."

"I'll be touching on important topics which I've always wanted to touch on as well as the fun ones."

All in all, he wants fans to know new music is on the horizon. He'll be dropping his first single soon, he says, maybe even next month.

"I will drop the single around December then drop something top of 2020."

That project won't be an album, but rather an EP to introduce his new sound.

For now, he's focused on music, upcoming festive gigs and trying to spend as much time as possible with family over the holidays.
