Meat outfits, panty-less performances, belly laughs – but most importantly raising awareness about issues faced by the LGBTIQ community – were the order of the day at the 9th annual Feather Awards. Director and founder of the awards, Thami Kotlolo, shares his favourite moments.
1 Skolopad’s R200 sausage dress
QwaQwa-born socialite Nonhlanhla “Skolopad” Qwabe made a grand entrance at this year’s Feather Awards in a see-through “dress” made of plastic and boerewors. The daring diva said it cost a mere R200. “My designer, Monadeciouse, doesn’t charge me for my looks, we sat down and created the look and I bought the wors for R200.”
After the show Skolopad stored the meat in a cooler box at a BP garage across the road from the venue and went off to the afterparty. Seeing as she carried a bag of charcoal around pre-ceremony, she probably won’t be going hungry over the weekend.
2 Kelly Khumalo’s performance with Kyle Deutsch
Many have been speculating Kelly and Kyle might be dating – and the two sure make magic on stage. At this year’s ceremony the duo gave a stellar performance of their single, Lonely Fool.
3 Zodwa Wabantu wins drama queen of the year
Zodwa has made it very clear she doesn’t wear any undergarments, she’s not a fan of Skolopad, she’s in the entertainment industry to make money, and she doesn’t care what people think about her. That alone should be enough to earn you the drama-queen title.
4 Amstel Maboa’s Feather of the year award
Too often, the people who pave the way for future generations go unrecognized. This year’s Feather Awards honored musician and LGBTIQ activist Amstel Maboa for his contribution in making a change.
