“The highlight of my career has been spending seven days in a car driving Bra Hugh around.”

J'Something and his brand manager and strategist, Dale Herbst, meet a lot of different people from all walks of life, but working with Bra Hugh Masekela was something special.

“His wit always had me smiling and laughing, not to forget his endless life stories. I’m sending love to his family and team during this time,” says Dale, who worked with Bra Hugh for two years as a brand manager on a project for Mercedes-Benz called Heaven in You.

“I have known him and his team for two years and became friends with his daughter Pula in 2010. Meeting, spending time and working with Bra Hugh on the creation of Heaven in You will remain one of the highlights of my career. I get to meet a lot of different people from all walks of life, but Bra Hugh touched my heart and imparted lessons on me that I will cherish forever.”

Meanwhile J’Something said he often gets asked what the highlight of his career has been. “People often expect me to jump to winning awards or selling out shows or performing for Obama ... none of these actually. The highlight of my career has been spending seven days in a car driving Bra Hugh around, writing music and talking (mostly listening) about life.

“Never have I met someone who imparted so much onto my life in such a short span of time. I will be writing a blog post to share with you more about what this man meant to me and what he left with me. To his family and his team, I pray for comfort and peace. Bra Hugh, I will miss you!”

Bra Hugh’s family released a statement this morning announcing their profound sorrow in sharing the news of his passing. “After a protracted and courageous battle with prostate cancer he passed peacefully in Johannesburg, South Africa, surrounded by his family,” the statement read.

The family described him as a loving father, brother, grandfather and friend, “Our hearts beat with profound loss. Rest in power beloved, you are forever in our hearts.”
