John Legend to Kanye: ‘You’re way too influential to endorse who [Trump] is’

By Mahlohonolo Magadla

US rapper Kanye West received a lot of backlash following his recent anti Obama, pro Trump tweets – from fans and fellow artists alike. The 40-year-old has been calling out former US president Barack Obama on issues that he feels weren’t properly addressed during his administration while showing love to the current president, Donald Trump.

His recent “free-thinking” has gotten a lot of people talking, including several of his fellow musicians who find his behaviour odd.

John Legend took it upon himself to try and get through to the artist by sending him private messages – which Yeezy promptly made public.

“Hey it’s JL. I hope you’ll reconsider aligning yourself with Trump” John texted. “You’re way too powerful and influential to endorse who he is and what he stands for. So many people who love you feel so betrayed right now because they know the harm that Trump’s policies cause, especially to people of color.”

The Love Me Now singer warned Kanye not to let this controversy ruin his legacy of being the “greatest artist of our generation” but even that didn’t seem to help.

Although Kanye welcomed John’s opinions, he firmly stood his ground and went on to post their full conversation to his Twitter account to “show that there are people around me that disagree with me and voice their opinion”.

See their full conversation and Kanye’s rebuttal below:

Sheesh! If John Legend can’t get through to Kanye, who could?
