Following the backlash she received for a recent TikTok video, media personality Lalla Hirayama has issued an apology. She has also warned others to be mindful of the culture and nuances of South Africans.
Lalla says the video, in which she impersonates a coloured woman singing MC Hammer’s 2 Legit 2 Quit, was intended only to entertain and not offend.
“My efforts were intended only to be entertaining. To share some uniquely South African ‘thing’ we celebrate as part of what makes us so good at overcoming adversity when the chips are low. I am sorry to know that it angered people,” read part of her statement, posted on Twitter.
While many continued to call her out after the apology, others felt there was nothing wrong with the video and that people were being overly sensitive.
