The national lockdown has completely changed life as we know it but, as the show must go on, we’ve all had to get creative. And often this creativity is tied to a heavy reliance on social media and technology.
This year’s South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas) ceremony was held virtually on social media, but due to technical difficulties the quality of the broadcast wasn’t quite as hoped.

Taking to Twitter, many fans complained about the quality of the live stream, which was presented by Dineo Ranaka.
National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) CEO Makhosazana Khanyile has since apologised on behalf of the foundation. “Last night the SAFTAs endeavoured to host the 14th annual awards ceremony on social media in response to the uncertainty around the duration of the current nationwide lockdown.
“In trying to use technology to celebrate our industry, we faced unforeseen technical difficulties that severely hampered the streaming of the show. Despite our best efforts, we were unable to deliver a show to the standards we had hoped for and for that we sincerely apologise,” she said.
“We would like to send a final word of apology to our nominees, winners, stakeholders, our friends in media as well as the general public who, despite the delay, stayed up with us last night to celebrate South Africa’s film and television talent. We thank you,” Khanyile concluded.
