News has it that Generations: The Legacy will not be featuring at the 12th annual South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas).

It has been reported that the popular soapie, and SABC2’s Muvhango, are not on the shortlist for most popular TV soap/telenovela category.

When asked to comment show creator Mfundi Vundla said they were not interested in the awards show. “We are not interested in those awards. They are not run properly; it’s jealous people with an agenda.”

He stressed that judges are sometimes aligned to other shows. “How can I be on the panel of judges and judge another soapie? How can Mfundi Vundla judge Scandal!? Why should I be put in such a position while I am associated with Generations? It’s not fair and it doesn’t make sense.”

Mfundi says the Saftas should copy international film festivals and get an international chair for the awards. “You have a chairman who is South African. Why not get someone from the BBC or BET?”

He believes an independent chairperson from outside South Africa would do justice to the credibility of the awards.

“[They] need someone independent and from outside who will look at [the entry] with a fresh eye and not someone with an agenda. This thing is not run properly and we will not be part of it,” he concludes.
