Singing sensation Mmatema Moremi has come far since her Idols SA days. The season 11 runner-up is ready to celebrate the month of love with her fans.

On Saturday 17 February she’ll be hosting The Love Connection with Mmatema at Winnie’s Soul & Jazz Restaurant in Wendywood, Joburg. Tickets for the show will be available at the door for R200.

DRUM caught up with the singer to find out more about the gig and her plans for the year.

1.       How did the idea for The Love Connection with Mmatema come about?

February is the month of love and also my crown birthday month. I’ll be turning 26 so because of that I wanted to celebrate my birthday with everyone in a special way. I asked people to give me ideas on social media and many asked for a show or a new single and I decide to do the show. I named it The Love Connection with Mmatema because I want people to connect through my music and just have a good time with me. I’d like the show to be a sing-along and there’ll be cake for everyone whose birthday is from the 17th to 26th.

2.       Which songs can fans expect to hear at the show?

People can expect to hear songs from my current album, Love.Praise.Worship, as well as a number of their favourite covers. Some of the songs I’ll be performing include I’m Sorry (which is an apology for wronging a lover), Oh I love You (which expresses love) and Ke Lerato.

3.        Speaking about Ke Lerato, what was the inspiration behind the hit?

I wrote Ke Lerato at the time South Africa was going through the worst in terms of homicide, women abuse and when the tragic news of Karabo Mokena broke. I wanted to encourage the spirit of caring for the next person on the street by singing about general love among humans. I remembered a scripture from the Bible and used that in the song.

4.       What are your plans for Valentine’s Day?

I don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day and I actually don’t have a reason for it. I’ll be rehearsing for Saturday’s show all day tomorrow and maybe I’ll go to Winnie’s since there’ll be performances.

5.       Could it be you’re not celebrating Valentine’s because there isn’t someone special in your life?

Haha! There are a lots of special people in my life but if you’re asking about me having a partner, the answer is yes. I’m in a relationship which is private but definitely not a secret.

6.       How has life been since Idols?

Idols is a huge platform for aspiring musicians. It gives great exposure and if you use the opportunity wisely you could go far. Idols played a big role in my career since it gave me a start and exposed me to people who were interested in my gift. It opened many doors for me.

7.       Tell us about your album, Love.Praise.Worship?

The album comprises 16 tracks. I wrote most of the songs in the comfort of my home because I wanted to avoid all the technicalities. Love.Praise.Worship inspired my current life and life post-Idols. I decided to fuse everything into one album because people expect to hear different sounds from me. Some want to hear gospel and others love songs. I wanted the album to appeal to everyone. It’s available on all digital platforms and will be available in stores on 6 March.

8.       What can your fans expect from you this year?

Fans can expect more of me. I’ll be pushing the album as much as I can by having an album tour in all major cities. I’ll also be doing more acting and presenting. I’m currently shooting the second season of Bone of My Bones and I’ll be on a new gospel show on SABC1. I recently also got an endorsement deal with a health and fitness company. I call this a year of breaking boundaries. I want to do things I’ve never done before and go beyond my limits. Maybe I’ll even do some dancing since I’m currently taking dance classes.
