Thuso Mbedu’s career is definitely on the up and up. The Mzansi Magic actress has been nominated for an International Emmy Award in the Best Performance by an Actress category for her role in the Mzansi Magic drama series, Is’thunzi.  On the day of the announcement DRUM caught up with her and she was still processing it all. Now almost a week later DRUM's Mpho Tshikhudo had a chat with the star on everything Emmys.

What does the nomination mean to you?

It means a lot because this is a big deal. Most professional actors dream and desire to be recognized globally so this is just surreal. But more than anything I'm extremely humbled by the support and the love I have received from South Africa after news of this nomination broke.

Is this your first nomination?

For the Emmys yes, but in August I was nominated for the Dstv Mzansi Viewers awards for Favourite Actress.

It’s a long-haul flight to New York. Who will be travelling with you?

My sister and my manager.

What are you planning to wear to the award ceremony?

Not so sure at the moment but I know I want it to be elegant and representative of me and our beautiful country.

In the event you win the award, what does your acceptance speech sound like?

Something very similar to the Instagram post I posted when I found out about the nomination… thanking Mzansi Magic for commissioning, Rapid Blue for the allowing Amanda Lane to create Isthunzi, my cast members because the show was a team effort and all of us contributed in making it such a success and without my ninjas there's no Winnie. Also, I have to thank my sister, friends and most importantly God Almighty.

Sdumo Mtshali has been a great help and a friend. Is he gonna make the ‘thank you’ list?

Definitely! The nomination came from season 1 and Sdumo played a big role in guiding me during season 1.

And your boyfriend? Is he gonna make your ‘thank you’ list?

Where is this boyfriend? Point me in his direction.

Apart from the awards what are you planning to do in New York?

Many people don't know that I love basketball and I would love to watch an NBA game live as that has always been one on my bucket list so I would like to watch a game as well as an NFL game live.

A lot of people recognise you from the Winnie role. What it’s like playing her?

Winnie was not my first major role. Boni from Saints and Sinners was. Winnie was challenging and difficult role to play but I enjoyed telling her story.

Who are some the actors and actresses you look up to?

Angela Basset, Denzel Washington, Taraji P Henson, and Meryl Streep.

Do you have any other talents?

I can hold a note good enough to star in a musical. I write well and I am a decent dancer.
