Cape Town - A hip-hop inspired Romeo and Juliet movie is coming to a Netflix screen near you.

This is after it was announced by the Hollywood Reporter that Will Smith and Queen Latifah are joining forces to produce the flick.

According to the website, the movie will be a contemporary musical on Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy that will be set in New York City.

The updated version will portray a young waitress from Brooklyn who falls in love with an aspiring musician from a wealthy family.

Queen Latifah is expected to produce the music for the movie through her Flavor Unit Entertainment banner, while Smith will act as an executive producer under his Overbrook Entertainment.

A release date for the movie has not yet been announced.

The new work will be a welcome relief for Queen Latifah whose show Star has just been cancelled after three seasons.

It’s still unclear if the show will be picked up by another network as fans have begun a petition to have the show return.

Even Lance Gross, one of the stars of the show, has hinted at a return for the popular Lee Daniel’s series.

In an Instagram post, he wrote: "I have to give a huge shoutout to all the Star fans! Your support has been beautiful over these past few years! And even more so now! We hear you?? For me, being apart of this cast & show has been an amazing ride! Don’t for one second think it’s over."
