Cape Town - Local entertainer Zodwa Wabantu has made a public apology following the controversial statements she made about the LGBTQ community on her reality show.

The 33-year-old apologised on her reality show Zodwa Wabantu: Uncensored on Saturday night saying that she had no idea what impact her comments would have.

"I walked around naked and I don’t want to be abused, and you also don’t deserve to be abused" she said on the show.

The repercussions of Zodwa’s actions stretched wide and she was subsequently stripped off the Drama Queen of The Year award that she received in 2017 at the Feather Awards.

The apology comes also after the show received negative comments from the viewers and media personalities such as: Mohale Motaung and Somizi Mhlongo.

Many even took to Twitter and called for the show to be canceled. Zodwa responded in her defense, saying that she had a lot of gay friends.

LGBTQ advocacy group, Johannesburg Pride, in a statement demanded that MultiChoice suspend the Zodwa Wabantu: Uncensored series on Moja Love "with immediate effect".

The Moja Love channel on DStv did not cancel the show, but issued an apology statement for their part in broadcasting the episode.

In response to a media enquiry by Channel24, MultiChoice said: "The MultiChoice Group strongly condemns any acts of discrimination".

"The MultiChoice Group distances itself from the commentary made by Zodwa Wabantu on independent channel Moja Love. It is important to note that, as Moja Love is an independent third-party channel, MultiChoice Group does not exercise editorial control over their broadcast."
