Motswako rapper Cassper Nyovest has become synonymous with filling up arenas. First it was the Ticketpro Dome in 2015, and later the big one – gathering about 68 000 people at FNB Stadium in 2017.

His FNB Stadium gig sold more tickets than concerts by international acts such as Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Bon Jovi and Coldplay, and Cassper got a lot of praise for his success from not just adoring fans but also from industry peers.

Yet this didn’t happen overnight. It’s been a long road to get here and Mufasa, as he’s affectionately known, still remembers his first solo gig. Just 20 people pitched but that didn’t dampen his spirits.

“My first one man show only had 20 people,” he recently said on Instagram, captioning two pics – one from that first gig and one from his stadium concert.

Yet Mufasa was encouraged to stay positive. “But those 20 people came to see me so I told myself that if I impress them, they will definitely go tell one friend and my next show will have 40 people. We kept on repeating the same formula till we had 68 000 people at soccer city stadium. #KeepGoing,” he posted.

It’s hard not to be impressed by the difference in those two snaps. A truly impressive accomplishment.
