Thuso Mbedu on absent fathers: ‘Stop fathering children and then deciding that fatherhood is not for you’

Emmy nominee actress Thuso Mbedu has had enough of men who are absent fathers.

The actress who was raised by her grandmother and only met her own father when she was 11 years old took to her Twitter page and told men to take responsibility for their kids or not have them at all if they don’t plan on taking care of them.

“Angry tweet: Stop fathering children and then deciding that fatherhood is not for you and then dipping. You will regret it. You will not know where to find your piece. It will be too late. As you were,” she wrote.

In an interview with Move! told revealed that her father didn’t know of her until she was 11 years old. Her parents separated before she was born. “My father did not know about me until after my mother’s passing. My mother found out that she was expecting me after they separated,” she said.

This didn’t demotivate her and learnt to be self-sufficient. “Losing my parents taught me to be independent and to be a strong young woman,” she said.

According to Psychology Today, fatherless children are more likely to suffer diminished self-concept and compromised physical and emotional security, behavioral problems, truancy and poor academic performance, delinquency and youth crime, including violent crime, drug and alcohol abuse, and mental health disorders.
