The first episode of the long-awaited Lebo Mathosa biopic aired on Wednesday night and had social media buzzing.
40-year-old actress and singer KB Motsilanyane plays the older version of the late diva while Bahumi Mhlongo plays the younger Lebo.
The first episode of the six-part series sparked a debate particularly over KB’s performance and some viewers were just not happy that there was no resemblance between KB and the later singer, which they felt added to the story ‘not being believable’.
Other viewers, however, believed she did a good job
KB replaced Kelly Khumalo who dropped the production after being confirmed as the lead.
She was aware of the backlash from people even before airing and understood how important the role was. In an interview with Drum she said, “My approach is not to be like her but to tell her story.”
KB stepped in and so excited to take on the role of Lebo Mathosa. For her, this is the highlight of her career, especially since she was inspired by Lebo back in the day.
“Lebo was massive, she gave her entire being when she was on stage and it’s an honour to be trusted with it,” she added.
