  • For the first time in the history of the pageant, Miss America will hold her title for two years.
  • The organisation postponed the 2021 pageant because of the coronavirus, meaning that Camille Schrier would have to hold on to her 2020 title until a she is able to hand it over to her successor.
  • The pandemic has forced many organisations to postpone their beauty pageants or rework their formats in order to adhere to social distancing laws.

Miss America 2020, Camille Schrier, is making history by becoming the first beauty queen to hold the title for two years.

This comes after the search for the 2021 title-holder, which would have taken place in December 2020, was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In an interview with PEOPLE, Schrier described the unique situation as "incredible", joking that it would probably be used as a question in trivia gameshow, Jeopardy!, in future.

"As someone who is a nontraditional competitor in the Miss America organisation... it's kind of on-brand for me to do it this way," she told the publication.

Schrier caught the world's attention when she became the first beauty queen to perform a science experiment during the talent portion of the Miss America pageant.

She took home the title in December 2019, but because of the coronavirus, her reign, which would have involved a lot of travelling and interacting with people, has been restricted to the virtual world.

"This is a hundred-year-old organisation, and I'm really the first person who's been faced with this," she said, adding that she has had to figure out how to adapt to the situation and move the work she has been doing to the online world.

As a response to Covid-19, many organisations have postponed their beauty pageants or reworked formats to adhere to social distancing guidelines and make it safer for participants.

The Miss South Africa Organisation announced in early May that its 2020 competition would go ahead with a "new format".

Entries for the pageant, which closed on 31 May, were submitted online. Though not much is known about the revised format of the upcoming competition, the Miss SA website has revealed that judging for semi-finals will begin in June and the pageant will take place in August.
