Johannesburg – On Thursday a brand-new Miss America was crowned, and it may just have been her love of science that sealed the deal for this beauty queen.

Camille Schrier, a 24-year-old pharmacy student, won the title of Miss Virginia earlier this year, and it was then that she first wowed judges with her "talent" - science.

Wearing a white lab coat, Camille created colourful foam explosions on stage when she mixed concentrated levels of hydrogen peroxide, dish soap, and food colouring with potassium iodide.

The beauty queen would go on to replicate the experiment at the 93rd Miss America pageant on 19 December, eventually walking away with the title.

According to The New York Times, winning the pageant means that Camille will be granted a $50 000 scholarship (around R712 000 at current exchange rate) and get to travel around the US to promote her "social impact initiative" which revolves around drug safety.

Camille takes over the title from Miss America 2019 Nia Franklin.

Georgia's Victoria Hill was named runner-up and was awarded a $25 000 scholarship (around R356 000 at current exchange rate), USA Today reports.

Judging the competition was singer Kelly Rowland, Queer Eye star Karamo Brown and actress Lauren Ash.

"@MissAmerica can be a scientist because a scientist IS NOW #MissAmerica2020," Virginia Tech, the university where Camille studied, tweeted after she won the crown.
