AS IT HAPPENED: Hugh Masekela memorial service

Cape Town - South African jazz legend Hugh Masekela was honoured during a moving memorial service in Johannesburg on Sunday.

As he was affectionately known, Bra Hugh's death was announced on Tuesday following a lengthy battle with prostate cancer.

Industry greats gathered to celebrate the late musician's life through a music celebration at the University of Johannesburg in Soweto. 

Programme directors for the afternoon were Tim Modise and Shado Twala. 

South African writer, sculptor, and poet Pitika Ntuli delivered a poem during the service.

Speakers included Peter Tladi and Babara Masekela, and musical performances by Lira.

Barbara said during the service: "My brother fought very, very bravely."

The memorial was followed by a musical concert.
