Berita bears her soul in debut album

Johannesburg - It was a great night with good music, good food and amazing company as Afro-soul singer Gugulethu “Berita” Khumalo mesmerised us with her soothing voice during her album listening session on Wednesday night.

The intimate invitation-only event held at the Universal Music studios in Rosebank left many with their eyes sparkling.

The singer’s live renditions of her songs seemed to transport guests to intimate moments shared with that special person in their lives.

We spotted former Muvhango actor Lesley Musina, DJ Mobi Dixon, whose real name is Mabi Ntuli, and Congolese-born singer-songwriter Tresor Riziki.

They all seemed to be enjoying Khumalo’s performance as much as everyone in the room.

City Press had a chat with the woman of the moment. She said she was excited that her dream had finally come true.

“It’s like I was carrying a baby and have now delivered it to the world,” Khumalo gushed.

“I am dedicating this album to my mother because she has always encouraged and supported me in my music career. Not every mother would do that.”

Khumalo’s mother must have known that someday her daughter would make headlines in the music industry.

Although this is her first album, the Afro-soul singer has been in the music industry for some time, having worked with music legends including Hugh Masekela and Oliver Mtukudzi.

This probably explains the perfection that is her debut album.

This is the sort of album you play on a long road trip; it has the potential to make you forget about the worries of this world.

Khumalo is not just a good singer but a great stage performer too.

At some point, I felt like I was watching a music video and my sentiments were shared by other guests who nodded with approval as she played the guitar.
