Johannesburg - While her ex, AKA, released one of the most talked about hip-hop albums of the year – Touch My Blood – Bonang Matheba proved herself queen of the South African media when she threw an A-list celebrity bash on her 31st birthday, at Taboo nightclub in Sandton last Saturday.
After the couple broke up earlier this year, AKA released a series of songs in which he fired shots at his ex-lover, including the track that drove Twitter insane, Beyonce. However, Bonang seems to have kept her focus on what is important in her life.
She invited her friends in the media industry to her party, including radio heavyweight DJ Fresh, hip-hop DJ PH and 5FM presenter and actress Thando Thabethe, who was also celebrating her birthday.
Despite the cold weather, the party was one to remember. The venue was so packed that people had to park on the streets.
Queen B took her time making her appearance on stage, but fans didn’t appear bothered and were enjoying their cognac. One of the hottest rappers in Mzansi, Kid X, got the crowd going with an outstanding performance.
The stage featured household names such as Khanya Mkangisa, hitmakers Busiswa and DJ Loyd, and Lorna Maseko, Boity Thulo and Maps Maponyane.
Bonang told her guests: “Part of the success of one’s journey has to do with the people you have by your side, walking the road with you. I am beyond happy to celebrate my birthday with so many of my special friends and family. It means everything to me.”
This year, Bonang has celebrated many milestones in her already successful career, including an invitation to host the Nelson Mandela Centenary Dinner in London, hosting the Miss SA pageant in May and the return of her popular reality TV show, Being Bonang.
The special moment of the night arrived in the form of a cake, and was followed by a loud rendition of Happy Birthday.
“I thank everyone for sharing these special moments with me. Here’s to a whole new chapter of being Bonang,” she said.
Since Queen B and AKA both have big egos, the battle about which half of this former poster couple is achieving greater success is likely to continue.
