It's been just over a month since radio personality, Bongani Mtolo announced his departure from KwaZulu-Natal radio station East Coast Radio to takeover from Phat Joe at Radio 2000 - and the award-winning DJ says he is looking forward to the challenge.

Speaking to DRUM, Bongani says after winning two Liberty Radio Awards for his show on East Coast Radio, he felt he needed a new challenge and decided to make the shift to talk radio.

"I wanted a new challenge. Since I was on the drive show, I won best drive show presenter at the Liberty Radio Awards for two years back to back, and I was nominated again this year, so I wanted a new challenge, and Radio 2000 was it," he says.

And on taking over from controversial radio presenter, Phat Joe, the DJ says he's confident he'll do well as it's something he's done before.

"I've done it before, so it was nothing new. At East Coast Radio I took over from him and did well, so it's nothing new to me," he says.

And while he says he's having a fantastic time and enjoying his new challenge of hosting the breakfast show on Radio 2000, Bongani admits things have been trying during the lockdown.

"It's been challenging on a personal level because of lockdown, but on a professional level, it's been amazing. I'm really enjoying the new challenge."

His two best moments at East Coast Radio include being recognised as the best in the country every year on the drive show and growing the numbers on the show. But now that he's on national radio, Bongani says he's glad he'll be on a platform that people trust for credible news.

"I also love how Radio 2000 is the station that people got to for credible information," he says.

And if you're wondering what you can expect from Bongani in his new role, the DJ who's well-known for his spontaneous and edgy opinions promises "real and honest" radio for the Radio 2000 listeners.

Catch him on The Take Off with Bongani Mtolo, and Nonala Tose breakfast show every weekday from 6:00 - 9:00 on Radio 2000.
