SIPHO ‘Brickz’ Ndlovu of the Sweetie My Baby fame is out on bail after he appealed his 15-year jail sentence for raping his niece, who was 16 at the time of the rape incident. Although he has been written-off by many people, it is said that Brickz is working on becoming a better man and wants to stay on the straight and narrow.

JAIL TIME

The rape case, which dragged on from 2013 was finally finalised last year, left the Soweto-born kwaito star discredited as he was once the finest talent the entertainment industry had. Many scandals, including that of alcohol and drug abuse, also saw Brickz hog front page covers of tabloids, resulting in him damaging his career and reputation. He has been in jail for only five months but that time was so long that the star kept pushing the possibility of getting an appeal despite a magistrate who once told the court that no court will consider an appeal on the case. According Grey Mafumbu, Brickz' close friend, who allegedly paid the R80 000 bail money, Brickz is now trying hard to be a better man. “While in jail, he focused on every good thing, especially when it comes to educational programmes and writing. He is also planning to write a book about his life,” says Gray.

A FAMILY TORN

In a letter his niece wrote during the trial, she said, “Malume, you have broken me deeply and I can’t put everything that I am feeling into writing. But my heart is bleeding because of anger, sadness and brokenness. I trusted you and treated you like my father.” The father of the rape victim, who is now 22 years old, has also expressed his disappointment over the judgment to grant Brickz bail because his daughter is still hurting. Although supportive of his friend and believing that he is innocent, Gray says he just wants the matter to be put to rest. “For me, it is about the truth not about how I feel. Being raped is the saddest thing to happen to a woman and being accused or set up for such a crime is not right. I want to see this coming to an end with the truth,” he says. Last year, Brickz’ wife, Nqobile Ndlovu, said the case was hard on her because she was caught up between supporting his husband and niece.

MORE DIRT

After Brickz was convicted of rape, Ntsiki Mazwai who once dated the kwaito star, claimed that she was also raped by him. However, she made the announcement on Twitter and has not formally opened a case against him. Brickz was not available for comment at the time of going to print.
