Celebville may seem to be all about the glitz and glam but for these celebrities answering the call of their ancestors has been most important. They have not been candid about exploring a spiritual and more cultural realm that forms part of their true identities. As the country celebrates Heritage Month it is refreshing to note celebrities who have unapologetically tapped into their authentic selves.

Boity Thulo

Media darling, Boity first shared pictures of herself in red and white beads proclaiming that she had answered her ancestral call. To the shock of many, critics did not hold back on their comments but the ‘it girl’ turned businesswoman could not be bothered. It has been over a year since news broke and she still remains a formidable force in the entertainment industry.

Buhle Mda

The leading lady of acapella group, The Soil took a sabbatical to go train as a sangoma. This happened when the group was at its peak but for Buhle, taking on the journey was most important. The group had to find a replacement for seven months until Buhle finished her initiation. Now she is back on as the lead vocalist of the group.

Lerato Mvelase

In 2015, actress Lerato Mvelase went on a three-month initiation as a sangoma and embraced the journey by sharing with the media what this journey meant to her.

All is well. #leratothemusician thank u @nolwazi shange for taking these beautiful pictures of me

Letoya Makhene

Singer and actress could be thought of at the ‘gobela’ of celeb ancestors new in the field. She has been a sangoma for over 10 years. There were rumours that she had stop being a traditional healer, something she harshly dismissed.
