SABC radio DJ fired over payola

Cape Town - The SABC has fired radio DJ Vukani "Chilli M" Masinga over payola and will be opening a criminal case over it as well.

The SABC confirms that Chilli M has been booted from the SABC where he was a DJ at Ukhozi FM after admitting to having accepted "some form of enticement in exchange for playlisting music".

Payola - the exchange of money, gifts and favours to radio presenters and playlist compilers who then favour, slot and play certain songs more - remains a worldwide problem.

Since the 90% local music play decree by SABC boss Hlaudi Motsoeneng in May, questions have been raised as to how the SABC is going to better combat the occurrence of payola as local artists, music publishers and promoters have a bigger vested interest in getting needletime for their particular songs.

The SABC in a statement says "there is a process at all its 18 radio stations to submit music and would like to encourage members of the public not to engage in payola and should they encounter such challenges, to bring it to the attention" of the SABC. You can read the full statement here

The SABC says it will start a criminal case against all parties who were involved and that Chilli M's firing comes after an investigation into allegations of payola.
