Clueless at the polo

The famous and not-so-famous were old-money chic and ready on a chilly Sunday to grace us with their best interpretation of Quintessentially African, the theme for this year’s Inanda Africa Cup Polo Tournament.

Oh, let’s not forget the horses.

A handful of people dedicated their time to watching the matches, some occasionally turned their heads in the direction of the field but the majority had zero clue about who won and other “official” things – myself included.

I mean, who are we kidding?

The polo has become one of the most popular social gatherings where one eats canapés and sips Champagne and pretends to care about the classy sport – that is it!

Later that evening I began an intense search to find out who had won but even on the internet there was nothing but photos of Thembi Seete, Bonang Matheba, Mbali Nkosi, Maps Maponyane and others.

Oops!

The setting was pretty, but what was most interesting were the occasional disappointed outbursts of those attending that the only complimentary drinks at the Skyy Vodka-sponsored event were not-so-great red wine, water and Appletiser.

Oh the travesty!

Skyy was there to make money babe...

The only way to buy drinks was by purchasing a R20 card that had to be loaded with money (your own money) inside the venue and then you could swipe away at the bar.

While I found the complaints that almost instantly followed a friendly “hi, how are you” hilarious, I’d advise the organisers to get better wine should they want the popular Mzansi crowd to increase the mellow social media posts that followed their irritation on Sunday.
