Countdown to Comic Con Africa - Everything you need to know about the 2019 festival

Johannesburg – Comic Con Africa 2019 is just a few days away, and if you've still got some questions about what to expect from the festival, we are here to answer them.

We've got the who, what, where, when and how about Comic Con Africa. Here's everything you should know.

What is Comic Con Africa?

Now in its second year, Comic Con Africa is the South African version of the popular Comic Con festival which was first established in the US in 1970.

The festival started out as a comic book convention in San Diego, showcasing mainly comic books and science fiction/fantasy films and shows, but since then has expanded to include genres like gaming, anime and toys.

This year Comic Con Africa will also include a KidsCon. As the first and entirely kid-focused convention in Africa, KidsCon is taking the term 'fun and games' to the next level by empowering kids to be expressive and embracing their individuality.

Who will be there?

A huge attraction at the Comic Con festivals are the celebrity guests who attend and take part in panel discussions.

In terms of international talent, this year fans can look forward to seeing Avengers star Anthony Mackie, iconic Star Trek actor William Shatner, and The Vampire Diaries' Daniel Gillies.

Voice actors Nolan North and Troy Baker will also be among stars attending.

When will it take place?

With an estimated 60 000 guests expected this year, Comic Con Africa promises to be bigger and better than ever. And in order to accommodate that, organisers decided to extend the festival by one day.

So unlike the 2018 event which occurred over three days, this time around, Comic Con will span four days from 21 to 24 September.

Where will it take place?

The first festival took place at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit and International Convention Centre, but the venue has now been changed to the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand to accommodate a larger group.

How will I stay up to date?

As with many things these days, there's an app for that.

Comic Con Africa has created its own app, for download on android and IOS devices, where fans can keep up with what's happening at all times.

This includes a map of the convention floor for easy navigation between halls and a programme to keep track of guest appearances, panel discussions and other activities.
