Cape Town - Award-winning actor Desmond Dube will join the cast of the Fugard Theatre’s production of hit musical King Kong from 2 January. Desmond will be playing the central role of Pop, a role previously played by Sne Dladla.

Speaking to radio station Cape Talk’s John Maytham, Desmond said he’s looking forward to stepping into a role that Sne played very well, but that it’s important to make the character your own.

“Sne Dladla was fantastic and he told the story the way Sne Dladla would tell the story,” Desmond told listeners. He went on to say that he still knew people who had lived in Sophiatown around the time in which the play is set and that their experiences and memories would help him in his role.

Desmond says he does stage work because he loves the craft. “It has challenges but I think it’s a happy challenge – it doesn’t necessarily pay today’s bills but there’s a happiness that comes with being on stage. We work for applause to be honest.”

King Kong is currently on at the Fugard Theatre in Cape Town until 2 February 2018.
