DJ Fresh awaiting confirmation from SABC regarding his reinstatement: 'I don't know when I'll be back on air'

Cape Town -  DJ Fresh has released an official statement, following his suspension from Metro FM.

The DJ, whose real name is Thato Sikwane was "unscheduled", from the SABC radio station after an "unfortunate choice of words were said on air", according to a statement released by the DJ's PR representative.

SABC spokesperson Vuyo Mthembu confirmed the suspension to Channel24 in June.

The statement follows recent reports that the DJ is rumoured to have signed a contract with Khaya FM

According to the release, DJ Fresh was suspended for two weeks while the national broadcaster was investigating the matter together with the BCCSA (Broadcast Complaints Commission of SA).

Following the two weeks suspension, DJ Fresh agreed to offer a public apology.

According to the statement, the SABC has requested an additional three-week suspension, and he is said to resume his position at Metro FM on Monday, 15 July.

DJ Fresh has called the extended suspension without pay "punitive."

"I have been working on the radio since 1992, and my passion for it has grown by the day. I have formed bonds with listeners and have loved watching my career grow. While I have had memorable moments on air, I have also had mishaps. I am passionate about what I do. While my choice of words has not always been correct, I speak from the heart and keep it authentic. I want to be back on air but don't know when that will be," said DJ Fresh.
