Dr Tumi: We are blessed to be a blessing

Johannesburg - Normally when people celebrate their birthdays they expect to be dined and wined, to go away on holiday or be showered with gifts.

Not Tumishang Makweya, popularly known as Dr Tumi.

The popular gospel artist decided to host a charity concert on his 37th birthday on Tuesday, where he received donations for a charity of his choice as his birthday gift.

The intimate concert was held at the Rockwood Theatre in Pretoria.

Dr Tumi gave away 400 free tickets to his supporters, but the catch was they had to donate something to the less privileged.

“We are blessed to be a blessing, not to just drive fancy cars. I never celebrate my birthday, so I thought if I am going to do it I will have people come celebrate and it is going to be for a good cause,” he said.

It was a wonderful concert, with a great atmosphere for any gospel music lover. The audience enjoyed performances from musicians such as the energetic Lucas Maloma, Joyous Celebration’s Sbu Noah, Breathe, Lebohang Kgaphola, Pastor Lungi Ndala and the marvellous Jesse Priestly, who was loved by the crowd so much that he had to perform twice.

The host for the night, Lesedi FM’s Seipati “Twasa” Seoke performed her turn-up gospel song, Busy, which had a house music touch to it.

The fire song got everyone dancing; even the little children were off their seats.

The atmosphere changed from hyper to a calmer one when Dr Tumi graced the stage and performed songs from his albums – Love and Grace, Heart of a King and his latest offering, The Gathering of Worshipers.

Songs such as Nothing Without You, You Are Here, Speak A Word, Because Of Jesus and There Is No Other Name had the most impact on the audience.

With the help of the audience, the musician and Universal Music managed to raise more than R55 000, which was donated to Matshidiso Sekuwe, the owner of Refilwe Legae Home that is based in Alexandra. The one-roomed home supports 18 children with no funding.

Dr Tumi also offered to take Sekuwe away on a holiday, just to relax.

It is clear that him being a medical doctor and a musician was not by accident; Dr Tumi was meant to spend his life changing people’s lives.
