Johannesburg – 2019 marks 30 years of the Johannesburg Pride Parade.
The event, which has become the most well-established pride event in South Africa, will take place on Saturday 26 October.
If you plan on joining the massive celebration, here's everything you need to know:
Pride of Africa
To celebrate 30 years of advocacy, Johannesburg Pride launched Pride of Africa this year – an umbrella organisation which will house JHB Pride, as well as other events aimed at the LGBTQ+ME community.
Since Pride of Africa's launch, pride month has seen events like the Pride of Africa Fashion Show, Lifestyle Conference, Brunch session and an Awards Gala Dinner take place.
Pride weekend starts off on Friday 25 October with a 'Pre-Pride Party' at Babylon the Joburg Bar in Illovo, Johannesburg. "Having secured the support of Sandton City Mall and Sandton Central, Africa's leading Pride event will return to the streets of Sandton after a seven-year hiatus," a press statement reads.
No need to stress about parking, guests will be afforded secure parking at the Sandton City Mall. From there you can make your way over to the Pride Village where you will have access to food stalls, bars, and a small market.
Medical services will also be on standby at Pride Village, as well as officers from the Johannesburg Metro Police Department and the South African Police Services who will also assist with regulating traffic as the parade gets underway.
The JHB Pride parade through the streets of Sandton kicks off at 14:00 from the Pride Village.
Entertaining attendees will be a mix of local and international stars including Sketchy Bongo, Locnville and runner-up of RuPaul's Drag Race season 11, Brooklyn Hytes, who will take on the role of 'Festival Grand Marshall'.
The event will end off with an exclusive after-party at the Babylon the Joburg Bar.
