Get to know Zola Nombona

Having played many roles and cemented herself as a fine young actress, Zola opens up about herself and her role on the Mzansi Magic prison drama series Lockdown.

  • She was born and raised in Mthatha, Eastern Cape and always wanted to be an actress growing up.
  • She bagged her first role on the SABC hit drama series Intersections, where she played a streetwise teen named Shado.
  • After intersections roles started pouring in. she starred in the anthology series Mzansi Love: Kasi Style, SABC1 sitcom Single Guyz and the spin-off Single Galz. In 2015 she stared in the second season of Forced Love and Z’bondiwe.
  • She fought hard for her current role on Mzansi Magic’s prison drama series Lockdown.
  • All her fight to get the role on Lockdown paid off because she joined the cast as Monde Jali, a woman jailed for possession of cocaine.
  • Zola says that the Lockdown cast is like her second family and that she could not have managed without their support and advice.  
  • On season 1 of Lockdown Zola has a rape scene which shook the shows fans and even the actress herself. She admitted that it was a hard one but her co-star (Lorcia Cooper) helped her through it.
  • Season 2 of the hit show is being shot and the actress revealed that her character (Monde) is going to go through a lot of pain.
  • Zola is still dumbfounded by the success of the show. She told Marie Claire in an interview, “I’m so happy I go to be the character of Monde. It’s an honour. I still can’t believe it, you know?”
  • She has big dreams of moving overseas and following in the footsteps of Trevor Noah and Pearl Thusi. Zola want to do everything involved in the entertainment business.
