Comedian and actor Sifiso Nene is known for making fun of taxi drivers’ mean behaviour, if he is not taking a jab at baby mamas and their unending drama. It’s been nine-year long journey for the KZN-born comic.
Sifiso became the first winner of South Africa’s So You Think You’re Funny. Since then, he’s hosted his own One Man shows across the country and has recently launched his new comedy club, The Comedy Basement, previously known as The Goliath Comedy Club in Braamfontein, Johannesburg. DRUM chats to him about the industry and his love for comedy.
I hate …
Hunger, petrol price because it goes up all the time and my baby mama because she has too much drama.
I haven’t given up because …
I love comedy. It makes me happy more than I make my audience happy. There is nothing in life that makes me this happy, not even my baby mama.
If given a chance to do something differently …
I would try to build my self-esteem earlier in life. If I had my confidence at a younger age maybe I would be at the international level now. But it’s fine, I will get there.
One thing I would tell aspiring comedians about the industry is …
Do comedy because you love it, don’t do it because everyone else is doing it because you won’t last. It’s not like music, you can’t hide behind the beat.
Sifiso brings the first Combo Comedy Show at The Big Top Arena in Carnival City on 3 November in partnership with Sun International. The show also features Mpho Popps, Tumi Morake, Loyiso Madiga and Thenjiwe Moseley.
