Hugh Masekela to perform at iRock Jazz Legends

Johannesburg - Award-winning local jazz legend, Hugh Masekela will perform at the DStv iRock Jazz Legends concert which will be held at Meropa Gardens in Polokwane, Limpopo on Friday, 22 September 2017.

This is a part of the DStv iRock Limpopo festival weekend.

Masekela’s solo career has spanned several decades, during which time he has released over 40 albums; and has worked with world-renowned artists like Harry Belafonte, Dizzy Gillespie, The Byrds, Fela Kuti, Marvin Gaye, Herb Alpert, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder and the late Miriam Makeba.

Here’s more about Hugh being on the line-up:

“Heritage weekend is only a month away and what better way to spend it than in the company of greatness! We are elated to have South African musical royalty, Hugh Masekela on the DStv iRock Limpopo weekend line-up. The musical legend will bring a sophisticated edge to the festival with his signature Afro-Jazz sound, which will appeal to and attract a brand-new audience to the iRock music festivals,” says Nomsa Chabeli Mazibuko, General Manager for Marketing at MultiChoice.

Masekela will perform alongside Limpopo’s very own legendary musician, Dr Thomas Chauke and another Southern gem, acoustic soul singer and composer, Gemma Griffiths. This young newcomer to the industry was born in Cape Town and raised in Harare, Zimbabwe and has performed a variety of music and arts festivals around the world. In 2016 Gemma, who is a classically trained musician, was nominated for a Zimbabwe Achievers Award in the category “Music Artist of the Year” where she also performed live in London, UK. She has opened for Zimbabwe’s Jah Prayzah, SA’s Jimmy Nevis, Majozi and Matthew Mole, and more recently for Grammy Award winning UK artist, Joss Stone on her world tour.
