Hugh Masekela's funeral will be private, for 'close friends and family'

Cape Town - Members of the late Hugh Masekela's family addressed the media at a press briefing in Johannesburg on Thursday.

News of the veteran musician's death broke on Tuesday.

Masekela's son Sal Masekela and Nephew Lesetja Masekela were joined by Peter Tladi and Dr Yastira Ramdas.

It was said that Masekela would have a private service, as he would have wanted an intimate funeral for close family and friends. A date has not been set as yet.

There will be at least three public memorial services held from 26 January with the main service on 28 January at the UJ Soweto Campus.

There will also be future memorials abroad where international artists will be able to celebrate him.

The family thanked South Africans for their messages of support and said the love they received from the world has been "incredible".
