Local celebrities make themselves app-ealing

Johannesburg - One could question why fans would buy information on and pictures of their favourite celebrities, when these are already available on social media for free.

But DJ Fresh and Bonang Matheba have taken to launching personalised apps like bees to honey.

The latest celebrity to follow the trend is Khanyi Mbau, whose app became available on Friday.

They all appear to have the same function: Overexposing their opinions to their fans.

The apps have content like gig guides and galleries. However, there is no information about their personal lives.

When comparing what is available on Twitter and Instagram with the information in the app, there’s lack of creativity and originality.

They essentially overlap.

Perhaps the apps might have more popularity if the content had a little more to offer, such as a personal touch.

The late pop icon Brenda Fassie apparently made several thousand rands returning calls to those who wanted her opinion on issues such as relationships.

However, the celebrities have risked excluding some of their loyal fans in the process of going the app route. They have lamented how they can’t afford to pay for apps, due to high data costs.

Khanyi Mbau Digital is available for download on the Google Play App store for a one-off fee of R29.99. Mbau is coming straight for Queen B by making her costs a little more affordable. Bonang’s fans have to cough up R60 a month for her app.

DJ Fresh’s app is free to activate.

Responding to Bonang’s app, Phil Mphela, who is an entertainment commenter and blogger, said on Twitter that Bonang should have just made it free.
