Margaret Gardiner, who was the first South African to be crowned Miss Universe in 1978, has shared rare photos from when she was a teenager working as a model in Paris - 44 years ago.

Sharing a photo from that period on Instagram, Margaret wrote: "Back when I was 16, I lived in Paris and worked as a model. People who know me really well would never recognise me from the time."

The former model, who now works as a journalist in Los Angeles, made a video compilation of her modelling career on YouTube, writing: "Some were taken in Paris, some in Argentina and South Africa. See if you can recognise anything from the girl, in the woman you see today."

She also thanked her fans for the continued support over the years.

One follower on Instagram wrote a message to Margaret in comments, saying: "I remember seeing you in Bloemfontein at a shopping Centre after you had won Miss Universe. As a young girl, I was in awe as you were so so tall and I remember that you had a beautiful aura about you. The other person I saw in London who had this aura was Princess Diana."

Margaret responded to the comments, writing: "That is just one of the nicest things to say."
