Johannesburg - Renowned photographer Siphiwe Mhlambi captured moments of the exploration of jazz musicians’ performances and self-expressions while playing their instruments.
The product of his lenswork is a photographic exhibition called Expressions, which opened at the FotoZA gallery in Rosebank on Thursday evening.
Former president Kgalema Motlanthe and his wife, Gugu Mtshali, were a few of the high-profile guests who graced the opening night.
“I am inspired by Mhlambi’s work. He is such an incredible lensman. I was blown away when he took my wedding pictures four years ago,” said Motlanthe.
The night was a splendid success for the photographer.
“I started photographing the jazz icons, the likes of Hugh Masekela and Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse, just to mention a few, 30 years ago. It was not an easy journey because at the time black photographers were not given a right platform to express their talent,” Mhlambi told the guests.
He said he was introduced to the camera as a young orphan.
“That’s when I developed the love for photography.”
The audience, drawn to the life of the musicians and their music, gave positive feedback on the exhibition.
The night was a splendid success for the photographer.

He said he was introduced to camera at an early age when he was an orphan.
“That’s when I developed the love for photography.”
The audience gave positive feedback on the exhibition as they were drawn to the life of the musicians and the music.
