Johannesburg – Local star Nandi Madida is making big moves in the fashion scene.
The TV personality, who will be hosting BET’s new reality show Made In Africa, made us proud when she showcased her Colour clothing label at New York fashion Week in February.
But that was just the beginning for the star.
Speaking to The Juice, Nandi recalled where her love for fashion came from. “At my 30th birthday party Minnie Dlamini reminded me that when I was 14 [or] 15 I was selling t-shirts. And she also reminded that I said I’d showcase at New York Fashion Week.”
Fast forward a couple of years, and her dream has come true.
And now, one New York show in the bag, the designer is already planning her next showcase in the Big Apple and revealed to The Juice that she will be working with New York based fashion designer Omar Salam.
“I can actually give you an exclusive. I will be collaborating with a gentleman called Omar – his label is called Sukeina. He’s actually been dressing Naomi Campbell of late, but he’s dressed a lot of people, including Thandi Newton for her last photoshoot. He lives in New York and we’re going to be collaborating on our collection for New York Fashion Week.”
About what it was like taking her work to the popular city for the first time, Nandi says her team played a big part in ensuring the show’s success.
“[It was] high pressure, but I have to give props to my team. In order to achieve anything, you need a good team, I was fortunate to have that. It was amazing. I met people I never thought I’d be able to meet so quickly who’d be interested in my show.”
Having made her mark in New York, the presenter also revealed to us that she will be taking her collection to Paris Fashion Week this year.
“I was very fortunate. I got the chance to see the Chanel showroom at the Rue Cambon. That inspired me so much because what a lot of people don’t know, from a commercial perspective of course New York is the hub for fashion, but from almost like a scholar perspective, that’s what Paris is about. It’s almost like when you get a nod from them in Paris then you really understand fashion and what it’s about. Because they’re all about the craftsmanship and the process of creating a garment. I’m excited to showcase there.”
