PAC releases tribute to late actor David Phetoe

Johannesburg – The Pan Africanist Congress of Azania has released a statement regarding the passing of veteran actor David Phetoe, calling the star a “true companion to the freedom fighters.”

The statement reads in part: “The now departed stage and Television actor and singer David Phetoe is veteran of the performance arts from the dark and difficult days.”

“Davido Phetoe worked with greats of the arts like Zakes Mofokeng – an iconic Africanist and culture activist – to oppose apartheid authorities by mobolising through theatre and music,” it goes on to say, adding: “We in the PAC recognise and acknowledge his contribution in the liberation struggle and in nation building. He was a true companion of the freedom fighters. And we in the PAC can attest to that.”

News of David Phetoe’s death broke on 2 February. The star was 85.

The now departed stage and Television actor and singer David Phetoe is veteran of the performance arts from the dark and difficult days.

The veteran actor, Nate Phetoe made it and established himself beyond all odds to reach the ripe old age of 85 years old is a marvel to learn from. He was personally harassed by security police of notorious John Vorster Square in the early 1970s as they also did that to his cousin Molefe Phineous Phetoe of the community based arts organisation, the music Drama Arts Literature Institute (MDALI).

David Phetoe worked with greats of the arts like Zakes Mofokeng – an iconic Africanist and culture activist – to oppose apartheid authorities by mobilising through theatre and music. He will be missed for his “Yebo gogo” ads which he did for a local mobile network.

Phetoe went on and made it to the great stage every time he was given opportunity. He was a true professional and integrated himself with each successive generation of performing artists. We in the PAC recognise and acknowledge his contribution in the liberation struggle and in nation building. He was a true companion of the freedom fighters. And we in the PAC can attest to that.
