Johannesburg – At an exclusive event on Wednesday morning, Universal Music Africa announced that local rising star Bonj will be the opening act for Sam Smith when he tours South Africa in April 2019.
The singer, who is signed by Jacquel Entertainment record label owner Tresor, wowed the audience with a live performance, giving everyone a taste of what to expect when she hits the stage alongside Sam.
In an interview with The Juice, Bonj said she was overjoyed when she got the news, adding that the timing was perfect. "It was insane because a week ago I was going through a lot emotionally. Obviously, it's the beginning of the year and I'm trying to plan my goals and figure out if I'm still on the right path with this music thing. I've been doing it for just over 10 years now and this news just came at the perfect time. It was affirmation basically."
The singer, who describes her sounds as "future soul with a blend of electronic and dance", has already started preparing for her set, saying that she will be bringing some "church" to her set.
"I plan on really letting it be a service - bringing healing, love and joy."
A big fan of Sam Smith herself, Bonj recalls first falling in love with the British star when she heard vocals on Naughty Boy's single La La La in 2013.
Sam Smith's The Thrill Of It All World Tour kicks off in Johannesburg at the Ticketpro Dome on 13 and 14 April, thereafter heading to The Grand Arena, Grand West in Cape Town for shows on 17, 18 and 19 April.
Tickets for the show are available at Computicket.
