Comedian Skhumba Hlophe scooped the biggest
award of the night at the Savanna Comic’s Awards at the weekend- The Comic of
the Year Award.
The audience waited with baited breath for
the last and most anticipated award of the night. If the audience were so keen
to hear who the winner was, imagine the jitters the nominees must have been
feeling. Skhumba stood out from the rest beating fellow nominees in the same
category which were: Celeste Ntuli, Loyiso Gola, Kagiso KG Mokgadi and Carvin H
When the seemingly emotional Skhumba walked
up on stage to receive the award, a standing ovation from the audience made the
moment gracious. “If I can do it, then I
want to tell any young child in the township with dream that it is possible. I
have been doing comedy for 10 years. I resigned from the SAPS in Decemeber 2016
to follow my passion and I have done it,” he said.
Skhumba not only walked away with the Comic
of the Year award but he also took home the Flying Solo Award. When accepting
this award, Skhumba bragged a little: “I have hosted four shows here and all
them sold out,” he said. There is no
disputing that his story remains inspirational, he is the current host of a successful
breakfast show on Kaya FM, he has an entertainment show on SABC1 and he has endorsement deals and corporate
gigs all making him live dream.
The yellow-carpet event hosted comedians
from all over the country and other countries. Nigerian comedian Bright Okpocha known as
Basketmouth won the inaugural Pan-African Comic of the Year Award.
